Red Alert in Peru Earthquake shakes Lima and Ica

350 deaths and more than 1500 injured people, many of them girls and boys, toll which could rise in the coming hours as rescue operations continue to do their job in Ica, Pisco and Chincha, affected places by the 7.9 earthquake registered this Wednesday August15 in Peru. The quake was centered off Perus Pacific shore in Pisco. It also shook Lima, causing panic due to the prolongation of its duration, as well as its magnitude. In Ica, Pisco and Chincha, the shocking scenario seen is only destroyed buildings and roads and people sleeping out in the open. That Wednesday night, it was necessary to improvise  campaign hospitals to help the injured people in the middle of darkness because the city was blacked out.

The rubble of buildings and many houses stops the rescue operations. There are dead people in the streets and in the square of Pisco, which according to its mayor Juan Mendoza, 70% of the city has been leveled by the earthquake.

The Peruvian coast affected by the earthquake is part of the tourist route to Nazca Lines, while Ica, surrounded by dunes, holds the Huacachina health resort, an oasis in the middle of the desert. The National Reserve of Paracas was also hit by the earthquake.

Since the earthquake struck at 23.40GMT on Wednesday, hundreds of aftershocks have been felt, and at least six have been strongly felt in the capital.
