Artists United for Peru Stage Special Concert to Benefit Earthquake Victims at the Los Angeles Sports Arena Oct. 7, 2007
Two dozen Latin entertainers bring their talents to a benefit concert in Los Angeles to aid victims of the deadly earthquake that rocked Peru on Aug. 15. The quake killed 513 people and toppled homes, schools and hospitals. An estimated 37,000 people are homeless.
Singers from Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic will take the stage at the Los Angeles Sports Arena on Sunday, Oct. 7. The entertainment begins at noon and concludes at 7 p.m.
Artists United for Peru offers a rare opportunity to enjoy the rich and varied styles of Latin music. Entertainers include Chiles Myriam Hernandez, a pop star who is recognizable throughout Latin America for her powerful vocals and romantic songs; Colombias Fanny Lu, whose 2006 debut L grimas Calidas landed singles on a variety of Billboard’s Latin charts; and Puerto Ricos Miguelito, a rising star of reggaeton, a danceable fusion of American rap and Jamaican reggae.
Other artists who have agreed to donate their time and talents are Argentinas Luis Angel and Nanci Guerrero; Puerto Ricos Angel Lopez and MDO; Perus Edith Bar, Grupo Rio and Ana Kohler; Mexicos Los Dos de Sinaloa, Pedro Rivera, Raza Obrera and Ulises Quintero; Chiles Jorge Gonzalez; Brazils Axe Bahia and Dominican Republics Magic Juan. More entertainers are expected to join this roster of talent as the concert date approaches.
Artists United for Peru is organized by Peruanitos Foundation, a non-profit organization in Culver City that is dedicated to improving the lives of Perus most impoverished children, especially those forced by poverty or violence to live on the street. The foundation (www.peruanitosfoundation.org) provides street orphans with safe shelter by repairing and remodeling Perus homes for abused and abandoned children. Since 2006, Peruanitos Foundation has remodeled a half dozen sites and donated clothes and other essential supplies to children.
Foundation President Jimmy Perez Johnson visited Peru just days after the earthquake to assess how the agency could assist in recovery efforts. Given Peruanitos Foundations mission to aid children and its experience with construction projects, the agency decided it could be most effective in rebuilding day care centers and schools in the earthquake zone.
All proceeds from the Oct. 7 concert at the Los Angeles Sports Arena will support Peruanitos Foundation and its work in the earthquake zone.
Tickets for Artists United for Peru are available for $50 and $25. They can be purchased at Ticketmaster and the Sports Arena box office, located at 3939 S. Figueroa St.
